Wrestling Mindset helped me become more aggressive and relentless. It helped me create goals for wrestling, school, and life. It helped me have a set routine before every match. Wrestling Mindset is a game changer.
Wrestling Mindset has completely changed me on and off the mat. I went from a shy and timid, to being confident and believing in myself and my abilities.
“This program is well worth the money. Having those 1-on-1 calls consistently with my mindset coach has improved me as a wrestler but also has helped me in life.”
Wrestling Mindset has helped me consistently compete at a high level without worrying about expectations and other things outside of my control. It has helped me become more aggressive on the mat and more confident off the mat.
The biggest impact mindset training has had on my wrestling career is that I am able to stay calm and focused on the big stage and in big matches.
I used to struggle being nervous before big matches. Wrestling Mindset has really helped me by boosting my confidence and settling my nerves. Wrestling Mindset has also taken my wrestling to the next level by helping me stay on the attack with the Predator Mindset.
Wrestling Mindset has improved Kyle’s focus during matches. He has a pre-match routine and resets his mind before every match. There is more of a level mindset before each match now vs. getting really amped up in the past.
Wrestling Mindset helped me learn to push myself everyday, by taking myself out of my comfort zone. Wrestling mindset works on one of the most important aspects of wrestling, while teaching you to enjoy the ride throughout your career. My mindset coach shows that he truly cares about me, and wants to see me exceed in all things in life on the mat and off the mat.
Wrestling Mindset helped me increase my confidence, stay calm under pressure, grow more mentally tough, and learn how to deal with nerves. I’d recommend Wrestling Mindset training because I believe it can help your confidence and is overall good for you.
“Slater’s mental readiness has transformed him into a world team member! Slater gives a lot of credit to Wrestling Mindset and preparing him for this great honor to represent his country!”
“Wrestling Mindset offers great mental preparation in sports and life. I’ve noticed a significant increase in my son’s confidence and preparation for practice and matches. It takes a lot off the parent to mentally prep their kid.”
Wrestling Mindset has really helped me stay focused on achieving my goal and with staying calm before matches.
Last year we had a few guys that would freeze up in “big” matches. Our mindset coach helped our wrestlers develop an individual plan to hit the reset button and work through their anxieties during those big matches. Wrestling Mindset helped us get over the mental hump and win the dual team state championship after placing 2nd three times and 3rd twice in the last 8 years.
“I no longer worry about who I wrestle, I just focus on scoring as many points as I can”
“Wrestling Mindset has improved my wrestling tremendously. It has helped me to be more calm and relaxed during competition. It also has helped me to stay on the attack and to have a Predator Mindset”
“Before I started Wrestling Mindset, I often worried and became anxious going into matches. I saw that I had a mental roadblock that held me back from my true potential. I’ve gotten much better at tackling each match with confidence. I believe mental strength is just as, if not more, important than speed and strength because it is what enables you to act confidently and put what you train into effect.”
Both our team and individual athletes have taken advantage of Wrestling Mindset training. I sincerely believe it has been the difference maker in our program.
We’re having a lot of fun all year long and wrestlers had great belief in themselves and their teammates because of our sessions with Wrestling Mindset
As we went through the program our women started to gain more confidence and just have fun with wrestling, not putting pressure on themselves.
I know for a fact the impact Wrestling Mindset had on our overall program.
Wrestling Mindset did a fantastic job in building confidence and communicating that wrestling is fun, and that we are all grateful for the opportunity to compete.
Going in as underdogs, Wrestling Mindset made the difference in winning an NCAA Championship.
Wrestling Mindset helped mold my 3 sons to be the total package. Their mental focus has shown with their improvement on the mat. They have taken a higher responsibility for their efforts in the classroom and participation in growing their faith. For all of this we are grateful for the mentoring into manhood.
“Mental toughness is just as important to me as speed, strength, and technique. Many times I have trained as hard as I possibly could and still came up short. I realized I was missing something, which was my mindset training. Ever since then I have been working with Wrestling Mindset to reach my full potential.”
Wrestling Mindset was one of the best investments I have made for Cole in his wrestling career. Training your body is important, however, having the belief that you can step on the mat and beat the guy across from you know matter who is of equal value. Thank you for breaking it down and helping him achieve his goal to repeat as PA State Champ!
“Wrestling Mindset training helped me build confidence which allowed me to relax under pressure. The 1-on-1 sessions with my mindset coach helped me not put so much pressure on myself and I wasn’t afraid to fail.”
Wrestling Mindset did a fantastic job in building confidence and communicating the point that wrestling is fun, and that we are all grateful for the opportunity to compete. We felt like we had another coach in our corner.
“Zack’s mindset coach quickly developed rapport with him. Zack’s sessions with his mindset coach provided him with effective & practical strategies that helped him prepare for his matches.
His coach was more than a coach- he was a mentor & friend to our son.”
“Wrestling Mindset taught me that you can train your mind the same way you train your body. Wrestling is more than just having a mindset. You need the tools to strengthen it, that is Wrestling Mindset. Wrestling Mindset helped me to score first and score often.”
Going in as underdogs, Wrestling Mindset made the difference in winning an NCAA Championship!
His composure in matches is easily seen on the mat and he’s learned to relax under pressure. The best part of all is the friendships and positive role models that are now in my son’s life.
Everyone was asking what’s so different about Imran this year? I tell them great coaching and Mindset Training
MINDSET WORKS!
He was able to fight through adversity that he wouldn’t have been able to before.
Imran is a better person because of it – money well spent!
Wrestling Mindset taught me new ways to transform my nerves into an edge for competition. It taught me to always be myself and always be on the hunt.
Wrestling Mindset has helped me be more aggressive and less concerned.
I saw myself Jump Levels. I began to open up, have fun and become less anxious.
Our team was able to break down some walls that kept us from performing at our best. As we went through the program our women started to gain more confidence and just have fun with wrestling. Not putting pressure on themselves to win every point or every match.
Our team learned how to relax and compete in high pressure situations.
Wrestling Mindset did a fantastic job in building confidence and communicating the point that wrestling is fun, and that we are all grateful for the opportunity to compete. We felt like we had another coach in our corner.
At first I thought it was just a Twitter handle, but the mindset worksheets helped us to organize our thoughts and understand what was holding us back and how to deal with that. I learned how my thoughts could easily impact my success.
We won our 13th consecutive state title this season. There is no doubt that the mental toughness that my team had developed was the deciding factor. The information in this program was very easy to follow and the worksheets are exactly what they need.
What gave me confidence was knowing that I spent hours doing something that many wrestlers did not, mentally preparing.
A lot goes into being successful besides just practicing every day. Wrestling Mindset taught our team how to physically and mentally prepare themselves on a daily basis.
Wrestling Mindset helped mold my 3 sons to be the total package. Their mental focus has shown with their continued improvement on the mat. They have taken a higher responsibility for their efforts in the classroom and participation in growing their faith. For all of this we are forever grateful for the mentoring into manhood.
We did a lot of mindset training this year. It helped me stay relaxed, really composed and let it all out.
We know that Wrestling Mindset has had a positive impact on these kids and teams.
Wrestling Mindset has helped me prepare for college. My mindset coach was a great mentor as well. I appreciate everything he did for me outside of our weekly call.
Wrestling Mindset helps me work through problem areas before they happen.
Working with Wrestling Mindset we found more focused training throughout the season, better match preparation and performance analysis. We feel that the principles taught in the Wrestling Mindset program can be directly related to success on and off the mat.
Both our team and individual athletes have taken advantage of Mindset training. I sincerely believe that it has been the difference maker in our program.
We’re having a lot of fun all year long, and wrestlers had a great belief in themselves and their teammates because of our sessions with Wrestling Mindset!
Going in as underdogs, Wrestling Mindset made the difference in winning an NCAA Championship!
I am no longer held back by any wrestler, crowd or moment. I can just go out on the mat and wrestle like myself.
It helped me not worry about records and rankings. I learned not to be afraid to fail or make mistakes, which is something we recited before and after each practice.
I know for a fact the impact that Wrestling Mindset has had on our overall program.
Like many parents, we invest a lot in our son’s wrestling. Wrestling Mindset has been money well spent as the lessons have helped his confidence on and off the mat.
I was able to stay calm and relentless on the biggest stage and win a national title.
It helps me get to know my athletes better and understand to know how to communicate with them before and after matches and in training. Wrestling Mindset helps me communicate the right message at the right time with my wrestlers.
The mental part is working! Drake had a great day yesterday at his state qualifier!
Wrestling Mindset helped me get through mental blocks, restore confidence in myself and stay on top of the podium after an injury. I developed more control over my thoughts and ultimately a tougher mindset.

There are a lot of pity parties going on at this point in the season. Wrestlers complaining about how hard practice is, making weight, bad matches, traveling, and on and on. Too much negativity. The wrestlers who get the most out of themselves during the break are good at reminding themselves what they love…

A consistent message of ours is to learn from the best. How do they think, what do they do, how do they live and how do they train? The Pennsylvania Coaches Convention was yet again a perfect opportunity to learn from the best coaches and wrestlers. Dave Crowell is one of my favorites. I love listening…

1. Meet with each of your teachers during office hours at least once in the beginning of semester. Introduce yourself, show them you care, ask them a question or two. You would be shocked how much this can help. I think I only went twice in college (some Ivy Leaguer). Once my grade was pumped…

What a week of Olympic wrestling! It is truly a pleasure watching the best in the world battle each other to achieve their wrestling dreams. Working with the Women’s Olympic team this year, it was great seeing them compete fearlessly and watching Helen Maroulis win in one of the greatest “upsets” of all time. Of…
Wrestling Mindset statement on J’den Cox semis match: First of all, we are big J’den Cox fans. He has an unbelievable mindset. We wanted him to win and this was absolutely crushing to watch. Now sentiments and emotion aside here is the scoop: Criteria is NOT to blame. Criteria is simple- highest amplitude score, least…
74 kilos was loaded with mindset lessons. First things first. Let’s give all credit in the world to Jordan Burroughs. He’s a great champion and person who had a ton of pressure on him. JB no doubt has a great mindset. We and his opponents know on a different day, everything could’ve been radically different…
Never forget these words: Your success in wrestling is the Icing on the Cake. It is not THE cake. Many wrestlers get this wrong. They make wrestling the cake. The problem is that wrestling ends and ultimately you do not have full control over the results. You control your effort and your attitude but not…

There’s a rule in wrestling: Never underestimate anyone! That goes for your opponent but even more so yourself! Who has been in this situation before: You are wrestling someone who you have too much respect for; you don’t wrestle aggressively and you start out very slow. You do not impose your will on your opponent.…

Answer yes to all these questions and you just may be on track. They are very simple questions, but as you know there is a big difference between simple and easy. Find out now if you have what it takes. 1. Do you REALLY believe that you will be a national champ? As simple as this…
8 words that will change the way your PERFORM: Act as if it were impossible to fail! Something I have learned years ago from Dr. Rob Gilbert of the Success Hotline. Olympic Trial Interviews #1 Topic: MINDSET! Have you seen the interviews from this weekend? How much more proof do you need? All the BEST talk about MINDSET: J’Den Cox- “That’s just my MINDSET, I’m not nervous at all. I’m ready to go. I don’t think about seedings or rankings.” Jordan Burroughs- “I’m MENTALLY TOUGHER” [this year]…
1. I am going to FOCUS on getting big and lifting now. Wrong! Unless you are a bodybuilder or powerlifter, your focus is never lifting. Now this doesn’t mean that you don’t lift your butt off now, but as long as you are a wrestler the focus is ALWAYS wrestling. You should be lifting to…
1. Nothing changes- prematch routine, power offense, recovery in between rounds. Live wrestling is live wrestling! 2. Draw first blood. Be first to go, score early, don’t wait or feel your opponent out. 3. Stay away from the hype. NYC and Madison Square Garden is great, but its just another arena to compete at. Focus…
1. Not being aggressive enough/Wrestling too conservatively. The best way to beat someone at or above your level is by wrestling aggressively and increasing your attack rate. It will help you to win both the physical and mental battle. Few people like to wrestle someone who is at them for 6 or 7 minutes straight. Watch this…
1. Make sure you make the most important thing the most important thing. If you want to achieve your goal on the mat, be successful in the classroom or at work, or be happy you need to know what you value most and live accordingly. If your faith or family is the most important thing…
This weekend was a good weekend to be a wrestling fan. I was fortunate to watch many matches from the Beast of the East and the US Nationals. I will focus on comparing a few observations between 4x Beast Champ Nick Suriano and 4x NCAA Champ & US Nationals Champ Kyle Dake. 1. Consistency- You…
TAKE THE FIRST SHOT (DRAW FIRST BLOOD) He who hesitates is lost! Last year during the season, we spoke about a golden rule of wrestling- do unto others before they do unto you. Some people misquoted me saying- do harm to others before they do harm to you. I like both. I want to clarify…
Rules of Wrestling Season: 1. Never be outworked. 2. Don’t focus on your record. Focus on getting better and going after the toughest challenges. 3. Remember that cutting weight doesn’t make you a better wrestler. 4. Have a purpose every practice. Stop going through the motions. Make sure you focus on the areas that will…
There’s a place for mercy, compassion, and empathy, but it’s not in competition. If you are going to look back and regret a loss or a close score, you must be willing to break your opponents, take no prisoners and step on their throat . You gotta have that Killer Instinct if you want to…
There is a false idea out there that it’s smooth sailing for many national and world champions. That practices, weight loss, and other training comes easy to them. That they dominate every day without losses and setbacks. Well I assure that national and world champions have their bad days too. They get beat up, embarrassed…
Mathematically, a pyramid can only be as tall as its base. What does this mean for wrestlers? You must build a strong foundation- spiritually, mentally and physically. If the foundation is weak, wrestling and life will continue to poke holes in it. You are bound to fail. But with the right foundation you are poised…

1. Wrestle because YOU want to. Your happiness and well being trumps success. If wrestling is not in your heart than do something else. Don’t do it for other people. 2. Focus on the process not the outcome. If you keep improving each day, wins and titles will take care of themselves. If you focus only on…
I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times- Bruce Lee In the age of technology, wrestlers have so many advantages. It is easier to follow college and world wrestling, learn technique, and watch wrestlers from around the globe. It is…
Competition can be a great thing but beware during preseason runs and conditioning. The number one focus needs to be improving your own conditioning as best as possible. Many times wrestlers focus on beating the guy next to him or “looking” like you are in good shape. Lets say you are running sprints next to…
1. Our medalists have a high attack rate. They are taking chances, creating scoring opportunities, and looking to score the entire match. Case in point: Jordan Burroughs up by 8 points with 30 seconds left to go in the World finals. Rather than wrestling in Defense mode, Jordan Burroughs stays on the gas and seals…
Many wrestlers do not understand the importance of sleep. If you help them understand this graph it will make them think twice about staying out late. Look how low the GH (growth hormone) spikes are during the day. Once you fall asleep they shoot up. Notice the HUGE spike at hour 7 of sleep.…

This message is for wrestlers who work their tails off. Slackers will use as an excuse to miss workouts. It is sad because there are many wrestlers who are hard working and passionate but they fail to improve…
1. A winner doesn’t make excuses. Its easy to find reasons to miss practices and workouts. Winner’s find reasons to attend them even when conditions are not ideal. 2. A winner maintains a White Belt Mentality. WInner’s know that they can learn something from everyone. They aren’t too proud to learn from people who are not “on their level.”…
1. Many of America’s best wrestlers have strong Faith. Listen to interviews by Jordan Burroughs, Brent Metcalf and Tervel Dlagnev. They speak openly about their faith. It’s on the forefront of their minds before and after they wrestle. To be the total package you need all 3 dimensions- Physical, Mental and Spiritual. 2. Offense eventually…
1. Not Pulling the Trigger. Wrestling too cautiously or conservative. 2. Looking like a different wrestler in practices and matches. 3. Lacking the Killer Instinct. Not wrestling aggressively. 4. Poor body language- looking scared or timid before matches. 5. Not wrestling to your potential. 6. Low confidence. 7. Very nervous before matches. 8. Easily distracted…

1. You agree that the sport is at least 50% mental. Any high level wrestler, coach or parent will tell you that wrestling is at least 50% mental. Usually the number is much higher. So why aren’t you directly training your mindset? 2. You do not get better at math by studying English. If there…

1. Stop cutting weight! The number one reason for burnout in the sport of wrestling is that wrestler’s are sick of cutting weight. We have worked with so many wrestlers who were ready to quit simply because they felt they needed to make a certain weight class or because they were sick of cutting weight. Most…

At this point in the season a lot of wrestlers, even very confident wrestlers, are having self doubts before and during competition. Is it wrong to have these self doubts or negative thoughts? Does it mean that you lack confidence? Does it mean there is something wrong with you? The thoughts/doubts are NOT the main problem.…

1. Throw out the word Perfection. Good enough is good enough. There is no perfect match or perfect opportunity for a takedown or turn. When it looks good go for it! If you wait for the “perfect opportunity” you are going to miss a ton of scoring opportunities and leave things to chance. Gene completed…
If you want to be successful in this sport you have to have a blatant disregard for rankings. Does the higher ranked wrestler get spotted a few points? Do they get to start with a leg? Do they get a gun and you get a knife? Make sure you wrestle the opponent and not their ranking.…
As we move into the postseason wrestling becomes more and more mental. Two of the most common mindset issues are beginning to surface to more and more. They were likely there all along but many people did/do nothing about it. (1) Wrestlers not REALLY believing they will accomplish their goals. Its easy to tell someone…
You are either a Competitor or Fan. This time of year wrestlers need to be extra careful of getting caught up in the “Fan Mentality.” I will admit it is harder today than ever before. There is a Mindset element to every aspect of the sport of wrestling (life too!) and weight cutting is no different. Over the past few weeks this is without a doubt the biggest issue on the mind of many of our wrestlers. We have spoken to many HS and college (even MS) wrestlers who are…
If you are focusing on your Super 32 record, placing, or wins/losses you are missing the point. This goes for wrestlers who went 0-2, placed or even won the whole darn thing. As a Coach or Parent it is advisable to avoid the common phrase “Give up One and not Two.” If you are coaching inexperienced wrestlers I have no problem with this phrase. In fact, it is an important lesson to understand. However, any intermediate or advanced wrestler is well aware that it is better to…
Stop letting injuries hold you back! I understand that injuries are often very physically restricting, but I also know that most injuries effect wrestlers more mentally than anything else. If you wrestle a long career, injuries in wrestling are going to happen. Almost no high level wrestler is competing completely injury free. That doesn’t mean…
Lou Holtz once said, “You’re never as good as everyone tells you when you win, and you’re never as bad as they say when you lose.” Somewhere in between the truth lies. I believe that the “a wins a win” mentality (although usually mentioned to to lift a wrestler’s spirit) is perhaps the most harmful…
Stop over complicating things. Stop making excuses. Success (although not easy) is simple. Here are the 3 steps that will guarantee lead to greater success. On the surface yesterday’s Toughness Tuesday challenge along with last week’s had nothing to do with wrestling. Yesterday’s challenge was to go out and meet as many strangers as possible and to record their names. Last week, the challenge was to take a 5 minute shower as cold as possible. I wrongly assumed that everyone…
Is cutting weight going to help or hurt you? Fortunately, there have been many studies done to answer your question. Are you all in? Are you committed? Its a simple question. If you have to think about it the answer is likely no. I have been asked, what does being all in mean? I watched a great clip last week on the Mindset of Will Smith. Thou hath heard it said: Thou Shalt not reach back, thou shalt not step over a whizzer, and thou shalt not granby roll whence thy opponent hath a half nelson. “A parent not being proud of you is far more frightening than the scariest opponent.” -Cael Sanderson 1. Verbally & Non-verbally communicate you believe in them. Random/Varied Drilling > Blocked Drilling Penn State, Oklahoma State, and others have adopted this Russian style of practice. Random Drilling (what Russians do)- practicing moves in…
Wrestlers are among the hardest workers in the world! But let’s face it, we all get a little lazy sometimes. Why are people lazy? Again, we must go back to motivation. The root word in motivation is motive. To understand any behavior or attitude, you must first consider the two basic human motives. When you…
1. What you do OFF the mat is as important as what you do ON the mat. Our world team members live the LIFESTYLE that allows them to compete at their highest level. They stay out of trouble, live lives of FAITH, remain humble, and focus on the things most people neglect- nutrition, proper sleep…

They lack David Taylor guts to pull the trigger when they see an opportunity. Maybe Kyle Dake and David Taylor have it naturally. More than likely they have learned…
There is always another level in you. I don’t care who you are. A JV wrestler or Jordan Burroughs. My dad has always been my role model. When I was a kid my dad would always ask my brothers and I, what is the biggest room in the world? Quickly we caught on- It is…
It is important to learn how to LET your body relax in stressful situations, matches, etc. Remember, you cannot try to relax you have to allow yourself to relax. 1. The focus should always be on your Effort & Attitude. Regardless of your…
Five finals matches went into overtime and 12 out of 14 matches were decided by three or less points. The margin for error was so small in almost every finals match and in so many other matches down in Atlantic City. What was the determining factor in each match? Was it strength, speed, technique, confidence,…
1. Bombard yourself with positive thoughts and focus on your strengths. This is not the time to be critical of yourself. Dwelling on setbacks, losses, injuries or weaknesses will only hurt confidence. We recommend our athletes watch their highlight tapes and best performances leading up to championship weekend. Watch yourself execute technique and compete fearlessly.…
The way I see it, you can look at nervousness one of two ways. 1- Nervousness means I am under pressure, afraid, shaky, etc. 2- Nervousness means I am spirited, full of adrenaline, human, focused, etc. Great wrestlers and competitors perceive nervousness as the latter. They look at it from a positive light, as something…
Maybe you suffered an injury this season that kept you inactive for a while, maybe you lost to several opponents that you know you are better than. None of that matters at this point! In fact, the only thing that matters and will directly effect your postseason success is the way that you interpret these…
1. Becoming too much of a fan, instead of a competitor. Stop reading the papers and forums. Throw away any rankings or predictions you see. When you compete in a tournament- stop watching too much wrestling. It usually makes wrestlers more nervous, less focused, and more aware of the crowd and other external factors. Instead…
What is the Magic Man’s greatest asset? Technique, speed, power, timing, conditioning, and on and on. Don’t get me wrong he has those too, but his greatest asset is his Confidence. I believe this is what separates David Taylor from the pack. Before each match, he KNOWS he is going to score a ton of…
1. Recharge your battery in between rounds. Detach yourself emotionally and mentally from other matches during the day. Don’t watch too much wrestling. Get out of the tournament area when there is some time to do so. Leave the building and get some fresh air if you can. 2. Do not make the tournament into an…
If I could sum up the post season in one word it would be Confidence. I believe that Confidence is what separates good wrestlers from great wrestlers. The wrestlers that win State and National Championships don’t stumble upon their wins. Ask any of them. They expected to Win going into the tournament. Now this of course…
1. Constantly look to score. Focus on putting points on the board, not winning the match 2. Score the next point. Each moment of wrestling. 3. Win the battle off the whistle. (top and bottom) 4. Look to turn and pin (don’t just ride). 5. Your tie or no tie. Never hang-out in his tie-up. Don’t “hang-out” in your tie-up either. Move…
1. Give up 1 but not 2 2. We need bonus points 3. A wins a win 4. All that matters is March 5. I cant accept losing 6. You should/shouldn’t beat this guy 7. Circle/Hang On/Drop to an Ankle (obvious hint to stall) 8. Don’t get pinned/stay off your back 9. This is what…
We’re about at that point half way through the season where things become very routine, boring, monotonous. We approach wrestling as another day in the office. You are a human, you make mistakes. The biggest Mindset mistake I saw this weekend while attending the Beast of the East was that guys were shutting down their Offense way too early. The wrestlers who I watched make this mistake were not out of shape, they were controlling the pace of the match; however with one or two point leads going…
I will start by saying- They all can be beat. It’s not an opinion it’s a fact. Let’s start from that premise. No one is unbeatable, no one is without flaws. If you don’t believe this, you are not one of the people who will pull off a huge upset. I really believe that what…

4 things I believe all Winners and Champions MUST possess- A no quit Mindset, a strong sense of Faith in what you are trying to accomplish, a willingness to ask for/find help, and the ability to take calculated risks. This story is a good depiction of all 4. About a year ago, my brother and…
1. If you don’t mind, it don’t matter – Pain, soreness and exhaustion are all ingredients that great wrestlers face everyday. If you don’t mind the pain you’ll be able to stay in better position throughout your match. Embrace the grind! 2. It don’t matter if the horse is blind…just keep loadin’ the wagon –…
Today we attended Bison Wrestling Club at Bucknell University and had the opportunity to speak to a group of very serious wrestlers and their parents. The club members recently started receiving…
One of the most important questions for a wrestler has began to surface- What weight class should I wrestle at this season? This is not only important for the wrestler’s success this season. It goes way beyond and will effect not only his/her performance, but can shape the wrestler’s long term feelings for the sport…
The 3 Pillars that uphold the Z-Fanatical Life Philosophy are Intensity, Consistency, and Constant Improvement. The Japanese word for Constant Improvement is “Kaizen.” I would suggest looking deeper how the Japanese apply this to business (big reason their products are as great as they are). For today’s post, I will be using an excerpt from…
Something I learned from Cael Sanderson & Kyle Dake this weekend: Ask Why in Wrestling as a Coach and as a Wrestler. Cael talked about how he has learned to ask why as a coach and it has helped his teams tremendously. He said you have to understand your wrestlers and when dealing with them you have…
The season is right around the corner, yet many wrestlers are NOT yet competing at the level they need to in order to achieve their goals this season. Many wrestlers are guilty of putting opponents on a pedestal, psyching themselves out, and wrestling scared. Stop trying to solve mindset problems with physical solutions. Attack the…

Wrestling Mindset endorses 3 Pillars of Training. 3 philosophies to live by. 3 WHYs- Intensity, Consistency, and Constant Improvement. Today is the Pillar #1- Intensity. Stop approaching your sport as a spectator! Players play, coaches coach, administrators administrate, and there can be no overlap in between. Identify your role first. You are a player, an athlete, a participant. This means you must think like a participant, not as a coach, not as an administrator, and certainly not as a fan.…
This weekend I attended the Maryland Coaches Convention. During my presentation I was asked for some ways to help wrestlers in dealing with losses or setbacks. As a person who makes many mistakes, I have become very effective at recovering. Here is my mental edge: (1) Remember God has a plan for you that is…
1. He is Fanatical about Wrestling and Training. Before he stepped onto the mat for a clinic (A CLINIC NOT A MATCH), he warmed up hard for at least 30 minutes. He had sweats on and hit a full body warm up- pushups, lunges, squats, situps, supermans (lower back), and much more. He was pouring…
1. Never assume a certain level of Fitness/Strength. Zach talked about his experience working with Top HS, college, and World Class Wrestlers. You may assume they would all have a great foundation of Strength Training, but he has found that not to be the case. One benchmark Zach uses before focusing on weight training-Can you/your…
I am convinced that the greatest asset of Jordan Burroughs is his Mindset shaped by his Faith in God. Jordan wrestles in the moment, he is poised throughout his matches, he believes he will accomplish his goals, yet he is not afraid of losing. I believe that Faith gives you a true purpose in wrestling far beyond…
5 of my favorite & most effective tips to make you feel unstoppable before you wrestle 1. Drill hard with a partner for 30 seconds about 2 minutes before you step on the mat. 2. Do 2 minutes of deep breathing in a quiet room when you’re on double deck. 3. Warm-up with music that…

1. Constantly evolve. You can never rest on your laurels or assume you know everything. Wrestling cannot assume it is safe because it’s the oldest sport. Same thing goes for you, always seek the next level in technique and competition. Get better everyday! 2. Don’t ignore your weaknesses. Wrestling must focus on promotion, inclusion, and community. The…

The past few weeks, I spoke of fueling yourself with optimal fuel. Obviously, you must fuel with proper Exercise and Nutrition, but also Mindset. Your Mindset fuel is your WHY. WHY you want the goal that you set. Your WHY powers all the decisions you make and actions you take. Z-Fanatical endorses 3 Pillars of…
We all know the magic word is please. But how many of us know the magic number? The magic number is the amount of times you must do something to become a world class expert at it. So if you wanted to have a world class ankle pick, how many times would you have to…
Success Algebra F = MA E= MC^2 K – A = 0 Wait, what was that last one? K – A = 0. Knowledge minus Action equals Zero. In other words, if you know what to do, but do not do what you know, nothing happens. Most people know what to do to achieve success.…
1. Passion– The best wrestlers love what they do period. More than just winning, they love to train, they love to compete, they love the grind. I talked with Olympic silver medalist and MMA fighter Matt Lindland this weekend and he told me that his mental edge is that he loves to train, compete, and of…

Here is a story from a Coach who wishes to remain anonymous, which I feel really embodies Wrestling Mindset. A stranger helped me out this morning without realizing it but in reality I helped myself out because that’s what I’ve always done. I got to the beach early and I went for a long run…
CHAPTER 4: PERFECTIONISM KILLS PERFORMANCE My Master’s Degree Thesis topic was: Anxiety and Perfectionism in High School Wrestlers. There are not many Psychology scholarly articles specifically on wrestlers. Here are the results in simplest terms. We know that Anxiety (stress, nervousness, fear) have a negative effect on performance. Perfectionism and Anxiety have a positive relationship.…
Being nervous, anxious, worried, or scared has a predictable affect on your mind. Tunnel vision sets in. You revert to your most rehearsed behaviors for safety. You become literal-minded. Have you ever tried telling a joke or being sarcastic with someone who is in this state of mind? Notice how they don’t quite get what…
To become a better competitor, one must practice competitiveness. The Best Powerlifting Gym in the World (Westside Barbell) on Mental Toughness: “At Westside, we have many in-house contests…They can happen without notice, and most often, that’s the case…If someone refuses to engage in a spontaneous contest, we will throw challenges at him when he least…
Chris Weidman (wrestler) took the Middleweight Championship of the world from Anderson Silva because Silva failed to keep his intensity level high. Will eventually beats skill (when skill begins to lack will). Now you may know the contents of this Mindset Monday before you read further. But before you click off, ask yourself, “How well…
Mental Toughness is plain and simple- never giving up no matter what. In my Personality Psychology class, we learned that Character is revealed during difficult times, not easy times. This may make intuitive sense to many people, but there is also a good amount of scientific research to support this idea. You just can’t ever…
Stop approaching your sport as a spectator! Players play, coaches coach, administrators administrate, and there can be no overlap in between. When we competed at the National Duals in college, Coach Zeke Jones reminded us, “We are here to compete, not as spectators.” In between rounds we didn’t stick around to watch Iowa vs Oklahoma…
Some athletes call it “the Zone” others call it “Flow,” scholars call it “the Ideal Peak Performance State (IPPS).” The feeling that you cannot miss, where time and accuracy seem to be moving and acting at your command. All good athletes and performers know this feeling. When you compete, the idea is to be in…
In competition, focus is best spent on the present moment- on actions. Thinking about past successes or failures will distract you from your mission. Your mission is whatever you have to do right now, not a few moments ago, not a few seconds from now, much less the end of the competition- but right NOW.…
Imagine yourself as a dot in the center of a circle. The circle represents your comfort zone. The walls of the circle represents your personal threshold- your personal limit. In the middle, you are well within your comfort zone. This is where most people choose to remain- never pushing the envelop or risking failure or…

Pre-Competition 1. I don’t care who I go against, I want everyone. I go after the tougher opponent. I live for the challenge. The best defense is a good offense right? Same thing with your mindset. If you seek the challenge and look for tougher opponents, you’re not worried about competing against someone good. You…

Why are people lazy? Again, we must go back to motivation. The root word in motivation is motive. To understand any behavior or attitude, you must first consider the two basic human motives. When you boil it all down the two human motives are (1) Avoid Pain (2) Gain Pleasure. Your mind links pleasure and/or…
To sum up Sport/Performance Psychology in a 3 word sentence- Pull the trigger! This is analogous to the Nike slogan of “Just Do It.” However, I like “pull the trigger” because it commands the most attention and includes a sense of urgency. When it comes right down to it, you are faced with one major…
*List your 10 greatest accomplishments in wrestling (competition or practice). If there aren’t 10 in wrestling, then include life to show yourself you are good at things you put your mind to. You have succeeded before and it will come again. *Make a highlight reel if you can, and play it twice a week. *Make…
Confidence is so important to our success I have decided to do at least a 3 part series. What can we do to build Unstoppable Confidence? A different approach to building confidence is taken from behavioral theorists (a major branch of psychology). It may be common sense that the body listens to the mind. If…
My high school wrestling coach, the great Steve Giordano (NJ State Champ & college All-American) would always tell us, “never give yourself an excuse to lose.” You do not want anything holding you back when you compete. If you choose to compete, If you choose to do anything, you must eliminate all excuses. In Sport…
Think back to the moments leading up to a big competition or performance. Think about the atmosphere in the locker room. Think about how people moved around. Before a competition or performance you tend to see a lot of nervous energy. People fidget and pace. They develop idiosyncratic quirks and twitches. They develop a tunnel…
1) Thinking that wrestling is life and death and not realizing that wrestling is just an opportunity to do something great. 2) Focusing on defending what your opponent does well instead of making your opponent react to what you do well. 3) Wrestling not to lose and trying to hold on to a lead 4)…
Getting involved in the “fan mentality”. Rankings, predictions, records, and seedings are great hype for wrestling media (Flowrestling, Trackwrestling, etc.) but can be a great distraction for wrestlers. If it isn’t helping you score points then it is probably a distraction. Leave the media to fans and spectators. Associating with negative people and small-time thinkers.…
Perfection is the enemy of good. When you were young, the adults taught you how to detect and delete mistakes. This makes sense. I order to achieve at a high level, mistakes must be reduced. The key thing to remember is that mistakes are never eliminated. We have all heard that practice makes perfect. Then…
You are a human, you make mistakes. When in doubt, err on the side of taking action. Sometimes you are forced to make a difficult decision. You have information supporting you, “going for it.” And you have conflicting information supporting, “not doing anything.” At this moment, 9 out of 10 times I would recommend going for it. You have a greater chance…
