Random/Varied Drilling > Blocked Drilling

Penn State, Oklahoma State, and others have adopted this Russian style of practice.

Blocked Drilling (what most people do)- – practicing the same move over and over with little-no resistance from a partner. ie. drilling a double leg takedown over and over again.

Random Drilling (what Russians do)- practicing moves in no particular sequence with varied levels of partner resistance.

Research shows that Blocked Drilling works well for beginners, but once a certain level of mastery is attained over any move, the athlete should switch to Varied/Random drilling.

Blocked drilling gives you a false sense of mastery in practice, but over time Random Drilling proves to have higher levels of motor learning and performance success.

Lesson-Hold off temporary feelings of success for actual success in matches!
