In this episode of the Wrestling Mindset Podcast, Gene Zannetti talks with Final X champion and World Team member Wyatt Hendrickson about why he says mindset is the key difference between making the world team and becoming a world champion.
Wyatt explains how deciding to be a national champion nine months before NCAA's shaped every training decision that followed, and why you cannot fool yourself at worlds if you did not live the lifestyle in training. He shares his dad's lesson that the match is won or lost before you ever step out on the mat.
He breaks down the difference between confidence and cockiness, noting that confidence has nothing to do with the other person and that opponents can feel which one you are before the match even starts. He also talks about being so locked in before the Gable finals that he never heard what Gable said to him, about wrestling your own match instead of your opponent's, about how training with David Taylor and Saeed Valencia replaced his ego with humility, and about why discipline trumps motivation because he trains for his future self, not his present comfort.
